Here is a follow-up to the Vancouver Joomla 1.5 Demo Camp. I apologize that it is somewhat late, but hey… better late than never!
The Joomla 1.5 Demo Camp was held by Rastin, Arash, and myself at the Network Hub in Vancouver. Turn out was really good with over 20 people in attendance.
Rastin (rmdStudio) opened the evening by introducing Joomla 1.5, while Arash (PeerGlobe) and I (as part of our demonstration) populated an empty Joomla site with content. The template for our project was provided by Andy Miller of RocketTheme – thanks Andy!
Demonstrations included how content (items) needed to be organized into Sections and Categories, and that we are then able access the organized content by creating menu items. We added several menu items to the main menu, each with a different layout – blog format, list format, and table format.
We also went over how to implement free marketing tools into our Joomla site such as Flickr, YouTube, Google Calendar, EventBrite, and Joomla Extensions and Plug-ins to show how to increase its functionality and marketing muscle.
The night wrapped up with me quickly running over Joomla 1.5 Template design. Firstly, I acknowledged Barrie North of CompassDesign for writing and making available to us his Joomla 1.5 Template Tutorial, as my notes were bits and pieces of his original tutorial. Thanks again Barrie!
We lighlty touched on the core template files, commands to call joomla modules, module display styles, and css, and ended the night with a few more questions, and networking.
Rastin, Arash, and myself wish to thank everyone who made this event a great success, including Robert (Network Hub), Andy (RocketTheme), Barrie (CompassDesign) and all those who participated – THANK YOU!

In that first pic, it looks like I’m trying to read whatever it was you were doing, Jen! hahahahaha. Funny angle…
Anyway, the DemoCamp was great, and I’m looking forward to maybe a part II. where we will all (I hope) have at least tried to do a bit with Joomla! and will be able to have more meaningful discussion of how to build Joomla! sites. Also looking forward to more DemoCamps, such as the upcoming Wordpress one, and any others the powers of Tazzu can dream up.
You’re busted for cheating!
It was a great night. Expect more informational events like this in the future. We will try to be more dilligent in keeping the discussion on topic from now on.
