Joomla DocCamp - finer than a marshmallow roast!

Joomla DocCamp Vancouver BC Canada

Well, the Vancouver Joomla DocCamp was a huge success!

More than a dozen of us camped out at Network Hub for the day… and between the free-flowing Timmy’s coffee and delicious donuts - conversation wound its way around Social Networking, Open Source, Content Management Systems vs Blogs, and Drupal, Wordpress, and Joomla of course!

With free wireless access, a beautfully warm & dry place to hang our hats, an extension cord to plug our laptops into (slightly resembling an octopus afterwards), and an exciting new Joomla product, it couldn’t help but be a near perfect DocCamp - all that was missing was the campfire and marshmallows!

How it worked…

The night before DocCamp, Rastin Mehr set up a copy of Joomla 1.5 online, and set up administrator accounts for all the participants, so that we could play around with the Admin Panel. Some were completely new to Joomla, others had worked with Joomla before and were doing comparisons of Joomla 1.0 vs Joomla 1.5.

Rastin opened the event with an introduction into website design (static leading to dynamic and onward) and the strength and flexibility of Joomla 1.5 After some discussion, we all received our Admin Names/Passwords and began snooping around the Joomla 1.5 Admin Panel. Soon after this, the sweet sound of fingers vigorously tapping on laptop keypads ensued.

Lunch was taken care of by the good people at Joomla, and enjoyed at Gastown’s Steamworks Restaurant. The food was hot, and delicious. After nourishing our somewhat already coffee and donut saturated bodies with real food, we headed back to the Network Hub for more blogging and conversation.

We noted at the beginning of the event that were 3 main groups of people in attendance: developers, designers and writers. So, logically each of us chose the medium we were most comfortable with, to document one or more aspects of Joomla 1.5 CMS. Some wrote in their blogs, others chose to contribute to the Joomla Wiki. Bruce Byfield, a very talented writer and knowledgeable in Technology and Open Source, conducted an interview with several of those in attendance. Rastin also did some video interviews with a few attendees.

While not all the documentation is complete, it will be exciting to see what articles, videos etc. come out of this really fun and stimulating event!

Rastin and I wish to extend a huge thank you to all the sponsors, and everyone who showed up and made this event memorable:
